Another VoIP service provider is seeking to leverage the ubiquitous Instant Messenger (IM) to offer VoIP services. IMvocal basically provides VoIP capabilities to your favorite IM program. The idea is simple. People should be able to reach you on your instant messenger using traditional telephone system.
When you sign up at imvocal, you can select a unique VOCAL ID (phone number) for yourself. You have to add IMVOCAL bot as your friend in your IM client and you are set!!! If anyone wishes to call you, the person needs to dial the (Toll free) IMVOCAL numbers and then dial your VOCAL ID and you would receive call on your IM. IMvocal has local dial in numbers in 5 countries (USA, UK, Australia, Singapore and Japan). So people in these countries can dial the toll free access numbers and reach you for free. But if you are not in one of these countries, do not worry. Lot of VoIP providers offer free calling to these countries, e.g. Earthcaller, Qttel, dukaDial, etc. You can also create a call-me widget which lets people connect with you faster. At this point you can only receive calls, but I am sure the company will soon offer call out service (for a fee, obviously).
This is great offering for users in countries where VoIP is still not advanced. Now you can avail the benefits of VoIP (check local rules and regulations) without much restrictions. So now you can receive unlimited free calls from across the world....
This is definitely not a revolutionary service. Gtalk2voip has been offering a similar service since long. IMvocal, however, is a well packaged service and an integrated solution. Also, it is much simple to use (there is no configuration involved).
